Deoxycholic Acid (DA) injections are indicated for improving the appearance of submental fat (chin fat/double chin). This cytolytic drug is injected into the subcutaneous tissue, destroying fat cells and hence, reducing the appearance of double chin. Depending on the amount of submental fat, multiple treatments may be required, each spaced at least 4 weeks apart. Once expected outcome is achieved, re-treatment is usually not needed as the cells in the treatment area will no longer be able to store fat.
-No aspirin for 10 days prior to treatment as you may bruise excessively.
-Also better to avoid vitamin E, Ginko Biloba, Aleve, St. John’s Wort, garlic and ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil).
-If you are taking prescription blood thinners, you must check with your prescribing doctor to see if you are able to stop them for 7-10 days before your appointment and at least for 2 days after treatment.
-If you have any history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores) on your face, make sure to inform your provider at least one week before your appointment, you can get medication to prevent an outbreak.
-Attend your appointment with a clean face and NO MAKEUP.
-Expect bruising and swelling in the treatment area which may last 1-2 weeks. Plan your treatment accordingly in case you have an event to attend to.
-Expect redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness after the injection. These usually subside within a few days but may last up to 1-2 weeks. If any of these symptoms persist longer or you develop other symptoms, please contact our clinic for advice at 613-813-8071.
-Cold compresses may be used after the treatment to reduce swelling and decrease soreness. Apply for 10-15min at a time. DO NOT apply cool packs to areas that are numb.
-You may take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) every 4-6 hours to help with any discomfort you may have.
-Makeup may be applied a few hours after treatment, if no complications are present, such as open wounds, bleeding, or infection.
-Avoid excessive touching or massaging the treatment areas for about 6 hours after the injections. The treated areas can be washed with a gentle cleanser or mild soap.

-Multiple treatments are necessary to obtain desired results.
